Apart from having his name used for the most used music software in the world, Jean Sibelius is probably most well known for writing very nationalist music relating to his homeland of Finland, such as Finlandia. His Karelia Suite is probably not as well known, but it’s one of those pieces that when you hear it, you say ‘Oh I know that’, but often you don’t know what piece it came from. Finland is probably the most desolate of all the Scandinavian countries and to get from one place to another is even today difficult. So imagine what it must have been like when Sibelius wrote Karelia Suite in 1893 even just to get home from work. It would be a long cold walk and you would probably need to have a good tune whistling around in your head to keep you happy on the journey. Gareth has arranged the 3rd movement of the Karelia Suite, a tune you will recognise and will definitely want to whistle along to.
