MARTYN PATTERSON
Cardiff born and Cardiff bred Martyn Patterson began playing the baritone at the age of nine. He quickly progressed through the South Glamorgan County Brass Band system and on to BTM where he made the switch to euphonium. There he enjoyed success at local level and appeared several times in the National Finals and the Europeans. He then went ‘up North' to study music performance and composition at Huddersfield University where he played for bands such as Sellers Engineering, Jayess (Queensbury) and Ever Ready. Throughout this time he played with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales for a total of nine years.
He came back to his roots to train to be a music teacher whilst playing for Tredegar Town Band again making several appearances at the National Finals, Europeans and a credible 2 nd place at the British Open in 1996.
Martyn then had six years ‘down-South' as Head of Music at Bridgemary Community School in Gosport , where he had many successes as Solo Euphonium of SWT Woodfalls Band including the opportunity to perform ‘Masquerade' at the National Finals in 2002. However, he couldn't stay away from his homeland and is now, back in South Wales as Solo Euphonium and Bandmaster at Tongwynlais Sliver Band.
He is an accomplished euphonium soloist and pianist. On euphonium he has gained success at many prestigious solo events. These include reaching the brass semi-finals at the BBC Young Musician of the Year , and also winning the British Open Solo Championship Best Euphonium prize for two successive years in 2003 and 2004. Not to mention numerous best solo and instrumentalist prizes he has won in band competitions.
