STUART PULLIN
Stuart Pullin was involved with Brass Bands since aged 7, when he began playing the Cornet with Eccleston Brass Band. He later changed to Tenor Horn and began a BA (hons) Band Musicianship course at Salford University in 1992. At the same time, he joined the Wingates Band, spending 2 years with this Famous outfit, culminating in winning the North West Area Championship Section.
Stuart then moved to the Yorkshire Building Society Band and with them enjoyed even more successes including a British Open and 2 European Championship victories. Moving on to Eb Bass, Stuart also changed Bands again, this time to take up the position of Principal Eb Bass of the Marple Band. After retiring from “full time” playing in 2001, Stuart played the euphonium “just for fun”.
After his retirement, Stuart was able to concentrate more on his composing, arranging and conducting career. He was the Musical Director of the Chorley Silver Band from it’s inception in 1996 and worked as an instrumental tutor for that Band. He was also the Musical Director of the Hesketh Bank Silver Band from 2001 onwards.
He returned to Salford in 1996 to begin an MA in Compositional Studies and graduated with a distinction in 1998. Stuart composed his first piece, a march, aged 15 and followed that up with 3 more marches and a set of variations while taking his ‘A’ levels. During his time at Salford, Stuart won two composing competitions, The Riyadh Wind Band Composing Competition and the Swindon Pegasus Brass Composing Competition (jointly). His composition “Musings” was used as the Test Piece for the Intermediate Section of the National Youth Championships of Great Britain in 1996 and currently appears on the Norwegian Youth Band’s Test Piece list. His arrangements have been used regularly, and recorded, by Bands such as Yorkshire Building Society Band.
Stuart sadly passed away from Leukaemia in 2007.
