"Picture the scene. Having just made brass band history at the Royal Albert Hall, becoming National Champions for the first time in their sixty-year existence, Leyland Band set about the task of wheeling the half-ton of solid silver that is the National Challenge Trophy to the Goat Tavern. The Goat Tavern is, apparently, the oldest pub in Kensington, having been open for light (and not-so-light) refreshments for over 300 years.

MD Russell Gray suggested a piece in honour of our day in London, and “The Goat” seemed as suitable a title as any. Celebrating with such a great bunch of people and some good beer made me realise just what real banding is all about, so I chose our venue as the title! Rather than opt for a drunken musical farce though, I in fact composed a suitably celebratory number, with just the one wayward moment for the trombones! The march adheres to the historical standard for a march, as used by such composers as John Philip Sousa, and contains moments for many players to shine, including principal cornet Andy Lord, soprano cornet (and failed weight-lifter) Ian Twiss, as well as moments for the euphonium and baritone section and, naturally, a chance for the bass end to show their limitless class!"
